The Night Circus

It really is about a circus that takes place at night. Rather, it is set in a night time circus. That's not what it's about. It's a love story. It's a mystery. It's poetry.
When you read it, it reminds you of other things you have read without being a copycat. It just makes you feel like you're with familiar company.
It's one of the best books I have read in the last five years. If you're looking for a book to read, this is it.

When you're five...

When you're five you can get up on the horse all by yourself at the Western Museum.
You can be Spiderman in your Halloween outfit, Puss in Boots later on and then Jack Sparrow if you feel like swinging your sword.

Sid the Science Kid

We learned from a friend of ours that Sid the Science Kid from PBS would be visiting The Science Center. It was a free event, but you had to reserve in advance. That day, we got even more excited to see Sid when all over the parking area, there were signs flashing "Sid the Science Kid- Sold Out". The auditorium looked really fun with balloons towers and posters like these all over. Then, Sid came out! For two songs. No friends joined him. No props and only ONE question to the hundreds of kids to interact. The the director of educational programming for PBS out of Washington DC, came out and enthusiastically told these 3-6 year olds that they get to see a Sid episode no one had seen yet! Then we all watched TV for 25 mins together. Then it was over.

I took my my kid to a museum to watch TV? Lame. It was worth every penny.

5th Birthday Marathon

Auntie Kelly observes a birthday month; I don't know how she does it. We have had two weeks of Birthday, and we're all exhausted! It was supposed to be a tidy weekend affair, but that was quickly derailed. At Milo's school, there were three birthdays on one day. No kid wants to share the limelight, so, they had to have three different party days. No preschool teacher wants three party days in a row, so the days had to be spaced out. Already the birthday was dragging out!
Then came the flu! Oh the flu. Yuck and Yuck. Vomiting and high fever sent us to the ER the very same night my friend was decorating this amazing cake five hours north. As we left the ER at 4:30 am, they were waking up to drive home in time for the party. My text kept them with the family a little longer, but the cake was not to be enjoyed by all. It was enjoyed though, yum. We did our best to eat the whole thing sharing some with friends nearby. After three days at home and a course of tamaflu, Milo was all better. I never caught it; I attribute that to the flu shot (mind you, Milo also had the shot, but 2 months before me). Lyman started to feel poorly, so I gave him my doses of preventive tamaflu. Now we are all 100% well, the parties are over and we have so many great gifts and memories to keep us until next year.

Party Time

After a week delay, we finally had Milo's party at an indoor play place with our friends. I think everyone had a super fun time. You really get what you pay (a lot) for at these places. They do all the set up, clean-up and the kids go nuts. Meanwhile, you just hang out, eat and talk with friends. It's great. Lyman made great sandwiches and hummus dip. I made fruit kabobs. I baked the cupcakes (no way could we match the cake from the week before!) and Milo decorated them with sprinkles. Yum. Nonna was even there watching via Skype!

Birthday Dinner

After the excitement of the party and opening presents at home, we all took nice, long naps. After we woke up, we went out for a lovely family dinner at an Italian place where Lyman plays sometimes. It was a nice end the the birthday marathon!
